Mural in Campdevànol: A message of hope and freedom against gender-based violence
In the small and charming village of Campdevànol, in Catalonia, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Barcelona artist MartaWaterme in a project that transcends the artistic to become an act of awareness and social vindication. It is a five-storey large-scale mural, designed with the intention of making visible and fighting against one of the biggest scourges of our society: gender violence.
This mural, which occupies an imposing surface on one of the town’s walls, was conceived as a symbol of hope, resistance and freedom. The central phrase, “Take flight, don’t be silent, no cage will give you freedom,” encapsulates the message we want to convey: the importance of raising your voice, breaking the silence and seeking personal freedom from oppression and abuse.
From the beginning, the creative process was a close collaboration with the local community, neighbors who showed incredible support and enthusiasm. The work seeks not only to be a visual reminder, but also an act of awareness that invites reflection and action, conveying a message of empowerment and hope.
The size of the mural and its strategic location in the village reinforce its impact. The scale allows the message to reach everyone, from regular passersby to visitors, creating a space for dialogue and awareness in the everyday environment. The technique used combines traditional elements of the mural with contemporary details, making the work durable and visually striking.
This project has been especially moving for me, as public art has a unique power to generate social change. The response from the community has been very positive, with many people expressing that the work has inspired them to speak out, support victims and fight against gender-based violence in their own environments. The collaboration with @martawaterme and Tardor also enriched the process, bringing different perspectives and styles that made the work even more powerful and meaningful.
In short, this mural in Campdevànol not only beautifies the urban space, but also functions as a constant reminder that freedom and dignity are fundamental rights that we must defend and promote. It is an act of resistance, a call to action and a demonstration that, through art, we can contribute to building a more just and conscious society.
For me, each project of this kind reaffirms the importance of art as a tool for social change and as a means to give a voice to those who need it most. I hope this work continues to inspire many people to take flight and not to remain silent in the face of injustice.
